Reminder – BNSF Enforcement of Carta Porte 3.0 Begins April 1, 2024

Date
Apr 1, 2024

As previously communicated, the Mexican Tax Authority (SAT) is enforcing Carta Porte 3.0 effective today, April 1, 2024. BNSF systems are equipped to accept and send Carta Porte 3.0 logic. The new rules for compliance include:

  • Mexican Material Code (MMT), which will be required on all loaded and revenue empty shipments with an origin or destination in Mexico. MMT will also be required on hazmat last-contained shipments moving across the border.
  • Mexican Importer Information, which will be required on all shipments destined for Mexico.

The BNSF Shipping Instructions Modification System (SIMS), the tool that allows customers to edit their waybills, will not be ready until June. In the interim, customers may setup billing patterns to Mexico by contacting BNSF Waybill Solutions via Message Us

As a reminder, failure to comply with Carta Porte rules may result in shipping delays or rejection at interchanges with Mexican railroads.

More information about Carta Porte requirements can be found in the AAR Carta Porte Supplement, and If you have questions about Carta Porte, please contact your BNSF marketing representative or BNSF Customer Support via Message Us or call (888) 428-2673 (when prompted, say “Mexico Customs”).
